Great Stories: Desert Island Discs

Great Stories is a series featuring positive and inspiring storytellers that I’ve encountered over the years.

Earlier this year I found the BBC radio program, Desert Island Discs and an interview I found particularly moving, with writer and conservationist Isabella Tree.

The premise of the podcast is the presenter, for this episode, Lauren Laverne, speaks with a well-known person, artists, actors, writers what eight songs they would take if they were stranded on a desert island. Guests share their life stories through the songs they choose.

I wanted to share Tree’s episode as she speaks about wilding and the ability of nature to heal itself when left on its own. She and her husband have 1400 acres in Sussex, England, where they moved from intensive agricultural practices, back in 2001, to a natural ecosystem. She writes about the experience, which is reviewed by The Guardian, Wilding by Isabella Tree review – how a farm returned to nature.

The program itself was born over 75 years ago, during the Second World War. The first program was recorded in a BBC’s bomb-damaged studio back in 1942.

They have put together a selection of episodes based on your mood.
