Making a Difference Inside Our Community

Much of the video work I’ve been hired to do in the past had to do with inspiring new audiences. Sharing stories mean to engage politicians, to change behavior, to inspire new donors.

Last week I shared a new podcast episode, talking to Artista Totale Giò Di Sera about his work with youth in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighborhood. He founded StreetUnivCity 25 years ago, to help the disadvantaged youth living in the neighborhood.

What struck me about our interview is that the stories he brings into the after school program and his radio program, Radio Kanaka International, are meant to inspire the youth, not tell their stories.

How often do we try to increase our reach and speak to new people rather than think about the stories that will inspire those in our own community?

In our conversation Giò shares insights into how through research, bringing in different voices to the community, and engaging with the youth themselves, his work is bringing a positive impact to a community that is struggling with gentrification, issues of mobbing/bullying and suicide.
